Trip Description / put-in informationIf you are looking for an easy access place to paddle on the peninsula (or somewhere near the South Bay, you should check out Corkscrew Slough in Redwood City.  This is a 8 mile paddle that (in my opinion) is better than Elkhorn Slough.  The main reason I like it better is the lack of crowds (you may see rowers in the deeper water, but few venture into the slough).  You will need high water (over 4 feet) to make this trip - the west end of the slough can get very shallow when the tide is less than 4 feet.  If you are adventuresome, you can venture into other little waterways - and even find through routes during the highest tides.  The put-in location is N37 30.156 W122 12.883.  This is a public launch site.  I often put in at the Stanford boat house - there is parking there that is reserved for public use during certain hours (after 6PM on weekdays).  To drive there, exit HWY 101 at Seaport Blvd (the other end of HWY 84 West).  Go down Seaport towards the bay, and turn left on Chesapeake.  If you are going to the public launch boat ramp, you will see signs and a parking lot (with a fresh water hose) as you are heading down Chesapeake.  If you are going to the put-in near Stanford's boat house, Turn left on Saginaw, and then a quick right on Cardinal Way.  Follow the road as it curves to the Stanford Boat house.  There is public parking near the boat house (look for the signs).  I've spoken with the coach, and he said it was okay to use the ramp, but it is very important to him that people don't drive right up to the ramp.  Instead, carry your kayak (or canoe) from the public parking to the kayak friendly dock.
