Kayak Put-In Info for: Port Costa - Carquinez Strait, Contra Costa County
Overview: Port Costa's 19th century wharves gave way to the busy freight & Amtrak railbeds that lie between a kayaker and water access.
Parking: Gravel lot at the foot of Canyon Lake Drive. Usually sports a large number of Harleys.
Facilities: None. No public boat launch, either. There is a trail from the northwest end of the parking lot to a pocket beach near the sanitation plant.
Amenities: The very colorful Warehouse Restaurant & Bar. No one will notice your neoprene amidst all the black leather. Hundreds of microbrews.
Directions: From I-80, take the Downtown Crockett exit (from the East Bay, exit on Pomona; from the North Bay, exit on San Pablo, turn left, and the road becomes Pomona). Follow Pomona east out of town; it becomes the Carquinez Scenic Drive. Turn left on Canyon Lake Dr and continue to the waterfront.
Cautions: The kayaker must carry gear across railroad tracks. Possible shady characters; watch over your personal property. Remember that there can be submerged pilings near the shore, especially downriver.
