Put-in information for Turney Street Public Boat Ramp, Sausalito
Overview: Good novice site, easy protected launch. There's lots to explore in Richardson Bay: stay in lee of hills and visit the houseboats to the north and the marinas to the south. Seals aplenty. Venture over to Tiburon if conditions match your skills and see where the landed class lives. Some boat traffic, mostly pleasure boats and rowers. There's a beach at Sea Trek. Pay attention to features when you launch, easy to forget where you came out!
Directions: Turney Street is off Bridgeway, the main street in Sausalito.
Parking: Can be tight. Fee lots you can walk to, or meters on street - $.25 per 15 minutes. Most park in front of vacant building to the south the the Paradise Bay restauraunt without problem. Also parking straight up the hill on turney street in front of the Playground never seems to have the 2 hour limit enforced even on weekends.
Facilities: None. Very bare bones dock.
Amenities: Just down the street is Margueritaville and many other fine eating and drinking establishments. Sea Trek and West Marine are nearby, and the Bay Model is always worth a look.
Cautions: Richardson Bay is somewhat protected but Summer winds come up in the afternoon from west/northwest, strong at times. Some parts of bay are shallow, check tides or risk getting stranded if too far north. Watch for boat traffic: yachts and motor boats entering the Sausalito marinas, and ferries to San Francisco and Angel Island.
Wildlife Advisory:
During the months of March-August, colonial seabirds such as Brandt's Cormorant, Pelagic Cormorant, Pigeon Guillemot, and Western Gulls are nesting on Alcatraz. In partnership with the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, PRBO Conservation Science has been monitoring these seabirds for over 10 years and have found that during this time, small personal watercraft such as kayaks, sculls, and other small boats need to stay 300' from the island. Approaching closer causes the parents to fly off their nests, making eggs & chicks vulnerable to predators, and could also potentially cause colony abandonment. Please help protect the seabirds and keep a safe distance. Let others now about the sensitivity of the birds at this time of year as well!
